'Weed coffee' to go on sale in Washington – and it's definitely Legal

Washington state is giving new meaning to the phrase ‘wake and bake' following the launch of a cannabis-infused coffee.

The cold-brewed drink, which is called Legal and is described by its creator Adam Stites as like having a “a nice IPA or glass of wine", contains about 20 milligrams of THC, a key psychoactive ingredient in cannabis.

Stites told My Northwest: “We don’t want to pack so much THC into every one of our drinks that it’s unpleasant, especially for people that are just getting in to marijuana.”

The Legal drinks line by Mirth Provisions comes in five flavours: plain, cream and sugar, and fruit flavours cherry, lemon and pomegranate. Each is mixed with a different strain of cannabis for a different affect.

In its manifesto, Mirth declares its intent to “promote widespread joy and secure the blessings of euphoria for ourselves and our buds.”

Washington, along with Colorado, is one of two states in which recreational marijuana is legal.

Unlike Colorado, however, the nascent cannabis industry is still beset by regulations. Despite being legalised at the ballot box 18 months ago, you still need a medical prescription to purchase weed.

The state Liquor Control Board, which oversees marijuana sales, says that the marijuana retails – of which there are 334 across the state – will start to receive licences in July.

As for Legal, Stites is yet to determine the price of his beverage, saying it will depend on how many retails stock the drinks. He says he is able to produce hundreds of these Legals per hour.
