virgin run... help

just doesn't seem like it's worth a Grow journal thread so i'll start off here :)

I can/will add plenty of info when more time becomes available but I'd LOVE a quick HIT of knowledge/experience

I started off fine with a paper towel germination (bag seeds)
the transition into 2 1/5" x 2 1/2" x 2" Rockwool sitting in a tray with oxygenated distilled water (+ "1/4" strength GH 3-part @ 5.6 ph) went well too.

now unfortunately the transition from the 2.5 x 2.5 x 2" into the 4" x 4" (placing/stacking the small rockwool into the pre "drilled" hole in the 4") is not doing well.

the only thing that has changed is:
I had about 2" to 4" of root beyond the Rockwool happily swimming away in the nutr bath that now got "shoved" back into the rockwool.

will the roots start diggin' in or should I help them through the 1" of RW @ the bottom and into the water again?

EDIT:

I'm hoping to keep the plants in veg, in these rockwool 4"er's, till I can clone and sex (the clones)

then im planning to transition the best lil'Lady (have 5 starts... ONE gotta be a girl) in the 4" RW cube into a 3.5 gal DWC (8" or 10" net buckets with clay beads) for flower.

You don't need to do anything to the 4 by's, the roots will work their way into the larger cubes just fine, and they will soak up the nutes the plants need.

Your fine...Im sure you was gentle when placeing the bare roots into the larger rockwool....that is where I see you may have issues...watch for a day or two and see how they react

:D
sweet I needed that!
after everything going so well and just getting bigger and greener and better
then to have the whole thing look withered and the biggest leaves curl and yellow...

it was a lil disconcerting

2.5 weeks ago (+/-)

just started (yesterday) 665 ppm "aggressive" Veg growth mix (GH Flora) @ 5.6 ph

Looking GOOD (yes?)

what's up with the " powder" on the leaves?
it wont just wash away

How soon can (should) I top these?

I only have about 42" between top of (3.5gal) bucket and bottom of lamps
flower lamps: 200W CFL and 200W Sol-2 LED in 20" x 25" x 68"
so I think topping / FIMing is in order

Thanks for all the help and reassurance!

PS

while im posting pics....
I LOVE this one

too bad we all KNOW its a DEA dog :(

looks like powdery mildew from too moist.. need to raise PH on those leaves to make it not want to stick around....
Sulphur burn or maybe a spray ...IMO if it gets worse for sure

Yes in hindsight this thread should have been put in the grow log section. Keep this beginner section more for reference.

The space sits at mid to low 40% humidity.
I wonder, if a leaf had nutrient solution spilled on it, would it leave a similar dust on the leaf once the water evaporated away?
I will do a VERY though cleaning and see if it comes back. As they are I simply misted the leafs and rubbed with my thumb.

Being bag seeds and my first try at this, I fear I've been a little sloppy.

Would the baking soda mix be misted directly on the leaves?

Can a mod move this thread into the log section or should I start a new thread?

thanks for the move

unfortunately, no school today so I have very limited to NO access to my cabinet till the young one is out of the house or asleep tonight.

I'm going to assume its hard water (dried nutrient) stain till I can look @ and properly clean them tonight.

[and yet the mind still races...]

I've actually been trying to add to my humidity as winter heating kills the moisture in the house.
(and now the possibility of things being too damp)

is there such a thing as too low a % for growing?
without trying, I think I could lower it into the mid/low 30%

[think I'm going to enjoy this new hobby]

My humidity reading does not show on my meter. It cuts out at around 18% but my plants look ok.

yeah..you want the Higher Humidty IMO....I run close to 45% in veg area and try keep same in flower...the Higher temps make it tougher to raise the Humidity...You said the Wi=hite powder would not wipe off when tryed???.....this would lead me to think more on the PM than a nute spray....Keep a close eye on them

here it is as of now

I'm going to say its from the (vigorously) bubbling nutrient.
What's left behind on the side of the tray looks very similar to what's on the leaf and it's only on the lowest leaves, and then only those near the bubbles.

as for cleaning/wiping away
all I did yesterday was mist the leaf with distilled water and wipe with my thumb, then after any water evaporated away, there was still a light dusting left behind... NOT a thorough cleaning

and here is how I'll test that theory:

is aluminum foil "ok" to be in contact with the water?
[paranoia much?]

once they grow a bit more and put some distance between the water surface and the leaves, this will all be moot but...

looks like pm...for sure.. below the rim above that bubbler is more like 75-80 % humidity.. Thats a wild guess but my point is its higher below rim where air movement obviously is not as good.
I would treat that if i were you sooner than later..
Maybe you could prop up higher in the bowl to get more airflow at base??

I also run a dry flower room with adverse affect being too much resin glands on my leafs....Ha!

well, I've gotten rid of the makeshift humidifier I had in the unused flower side of the cabinet (air gets drawn in from the flower side threw the middle wall and pushed out the veg side, (through a 4" x 20" carbon scrubber) and dropped the house humidifier 5-10%

right after I set up those foil guards to keep the bubble spray/mist from getting on the leafs, I wiped that VERY dirty leaf off. I'll check them out tonight around 10pm EST and post up some B4 and after pics.

oh, and I found the baking soda in the kitchen just incase too

IMO the foil worked.

here is the same leaf after being blocked from the bubbles and then wiped clean;
8 hours later (7 of which was dark) dry as a bone (and fried to a crisp ) but not powdery

and here are the other leafs on the other side of the tray

I'll be sure to wipe them off real well and from now on keep them the F away from the nutrient bubbles.

morning "ladies"...

you look so much better without all that powder!

a little cramped for space right now but once they get above the rim of the tray EVERYTHING gets better.

todays question:
should I remove the entire damaged leaves or cut the worst part off or.... ?

Let it ride my friend....The plant will use up the resources left in the leaf..I like to wait for the leafs to die and fall off...

Glad to see you fixed the issues....Now lets get them Babes a growing

I come from a hobby of computer over clocking so it was all about change and doing things and tweaking settings... there was no "let it ride"

patience and letting nature take its course will take some time to get used to.

I know some (nasty) medicine that tends to help

so lets suppose, for 4-6 hours per day, I could interact with the plants. is there something I could do to help them?
I've read of spraying a foliage "tea" (ingredients??) or seltzer water spray for Co2... thoughts/suggestions?

at some point here, I will not have room for all 5 of these plants in veg. this will probably happen before I clone/sex them.
could a more experienced member suggest things to look for when picking the ones to keep or get rid of.
stem size? leaf size, color? (big ol' tatas or straight teeth and a good education)

as always, thank you for sharing your knowledge/experience!!!

straight teeth and education ...

theres nothing you can do to speed the plants up...as for the cloning question..i like to look for the plants that bush out Naturally and rub the stem for smells...I also clone every female because you never know what they like untill you flower them out...I dont know how many plants I wished I had cloned...another thing I look for is vigor ....Nothing like a Vigorous Girl

actually, I should rush these to flower as a batch and pull the male(s) ASATS (as soon as they show)
they are Oh-high-oh schwag / brick weed bag seeds

-butt- (fine butt?)

I want to learn how to clone on these before I'm about to cut into some pedigreed plant-life

(feel free to help me suggestions on what I should start next)
wink wink, nudge nudge,

-and-

if I can successfully isolate a female etc etc (soooo much more to learn) it should be better than I'm vape'n now.
[ rant] grumble grumble... move'n to a Med/Rec state... grumble [/ rant]

EDIT:
anyone who doesn't know the ;) ;) ...
